Volatec, the partner responsible for synthesizing, purifying, and characterizing appropriate compounds for various elements for ALD, gave us their take on the CONCEPT project.
Tell us more about the very beginning of CONCEPT – the proposal, setting up the team, and your very first impressions.
Marja: Volatec has been invited as a partner for the project since a long experience in the developing suitable precursors for atomic layer deposition. Our role has been very clear from the beginning. It was exciting to see in the preparation phase of the proposal how very high qualified people have iterated the knowledge required to enable the targets of the project proposal and have found very good teams to work for the common goal.
Jani: I got employed partly on the project so I can only tell about my first impressions. My background is in synthesis and organic chemistry so the CONCEPT project is an extension to what I already know and incredibly intresting opportunity to get into the ALD field. I was really excited to get into the project and work with and learn from Dr. Lasdaf and Tiitta who have decades of experience on the field.
How do you think the CONCEPT project will provide a new ICT paradigm and achieve its goals?
The motivation for CONCEPT is to find ways to overcome limitations of already established Si-based electronics. I think by developing new possible materials and device infrastructures it can be achieved. Having together experts from many different backgrounds and fields, working on a common goal. From Volatec point of view, everything starts from the precursors. We need to find and develop efficient precursors to work in the ALD-reactors to achieve crystalline growth for complex oxides, which work in the reactor systems used on the project.
What is the main result that CONCEPT will deliver?
As the whole project, I feel the main results will be in the field of ALD-grown complex oxide films utilized in various electronic components and architectures. CONCEPT will also unite people in collaborations and provide contacts for further projects. For Volatec I think main results will be the developed precursors that will be used for the technologies emerged from the project.
