Work in CONCEPT
In the project CONCEPT, Lumiphase will evaluate the deposition method developed by Baldur, Volatec and UoO. Virtual substrates developed internally at Lumiphase will first be supplied to the consortium. These substrates enable the epitaxy of oxides on silicon. In the second stage, the characteristics of BTO films will be benchmarked against Lumiphase’s internal standard. The final evaluation will be based on PIC devices fabricated in Lumiphase’s standard flow, using BTO thin films developed by the consortium. In parallel, Lumiphase will supply virtual substrates to the other partners in the consortium. The objective is to enable the development of their technology, which are all based on crystalline, ferroelectric oxides.
Institution Information
Lumiphase AG is a Swiss start-up founded in 2020. We commercialize Silicon-based photonic integrated circuits (Si-PIC) exploiting the electro-optic properties of ferroelectric materials. We develop electro-optic modulators or switches for next generation high-speed data communication application. We enable our clients to benefit from our unique technology to control the phase of the light, namely compactness, speed, energy efficiency and low optical losses, all compatible with advanced integration schemes. We also explore the use of our generic technology with selected partners to enable novel applications. Former employees of IBM Research Europe, the European branch of IBM Research created the company. They pioneered this research field and developed it to a level of maturity that can be exploited today by Lumiphase. The company has set up an ambitious development plan, through the development of its own materials and device technology. In this framework, the involvement of Lumiphase in the European R&D network is essential for the development of the company, facilitated by the long experience of Lumiphase’s key personnel in many EU projects.
